A 23 years old beauty queen from Kenosha, Wisconsin, has won the Miss America pageant in Las Vegas.
Laura Kaeppeler won the contest on Saturday night after pacing in a white bikini and evening gown beaded black, singing opera and answer questions about whether beauty queens should declare their political by saying Miss America represents everyone.
"Miss America represents everyone, so I think the message for political candidates is that they represent all the people also," said Kaeppeler. "And so in these economic times, we need to look ahead to what America needs, and I think Miss America should represent all."
Miss Oklahoma Betty Thompson was second, while Miss New York Kaitlyn Monte placed third.
Kaeppeler won a scholarship and earned $ 50,000 for one year. Its platform during the competition has been supporting and mentoring children of incarcerated parents.
Kaeppeler selected as the winner by a panel of seven judges during the live telecast on ABC. This event is the culmination of a week and months of preparation for the initial competition titleholders from all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands.
The new Miss America will spend the next year touring the country to talk with different groups and raise money for Children's Miracle Network, the official charity of Miss America Organization.
Teresa Scanlan Nebraska won the Miss America last year at age 17 to become the youngest winner of the contest. She said the contestants nerves' likelihood are at their highest point before the contest.
"You can always breathe sigh of relief" after the contest begins, says Scanlan.
Officials announced the winners of previous contests the preliminary competitions, including Miss Hawaii Lauren Cheape, Miss Oklahoma Betty Thompson and Kaeppeler for talent, and Miss New York Kaitlin Monte, Miss Morris and Miss Kendall Texas Utah Danica Olsen for a swimsuit.
Officials also said Miss Idaho Genevieve Nutting won Fourpoints $ 2,000, while Miss Kentucky Ann-Blair Thornton won a $ 6,000 scholarship Quality of Life.
Miss America Organization touts itself as the world's largest scholarship provider for women, with approximately $ 350,000 will be awarded this year at the national level.
Scanlan said he plans to use her scholarship to help pay for the travel route to law school in political life.
